In the Tang dynasty, the doorsill of the imperial examination rated so high that merely20-30people could be admitted.During the middle and late Tang dynasty, the whole Jiangxi province owned77jinshis,of which33jinshis emerged from Yuanzhou, including Lu Zhao and Yi Chong, zhuangyuan of the third and fifth year of Huichang.By constrasting yuanzhou’s jinshis with the ones from lateral administrative units of Jiangxi even of the whole country at the same period,we could come to a conclusion that Yuanzhou candidates played excellently in imperial examinations during the middle and late Tang dynasty. I will reason this impressive phenomena from cultural perspective in my dissertation.First of all, traditions of reclusion and"part work, part study"which had preexisted in Yuanzhou played a basic role in jinshis boom.Secondly, the officials exiled to Yuanzhou brought about an important juncture for Yuanzhou candidates passing the examination.Thirdly, the development of Chan buddhism culture in Yuanzhou contributed to the fantastic achievement. The jinshis boom accelerated the formation of the gentry group of Yuanzhou, which had a certain influence in that society, promoted the level of culture and education of Yuanzhou and eventually made a positive contribution to the jinshis boom.If we look back upon the middle and late Tang dynasty from the Song dynasty,we could find out that the excellence of Yuanzhou people in the examination is a foreshadowing of Song dynasty,a period of overall culture prosperity.
