OBJECTIVE:Investigating the causes of polyhydramnios and its impact on pregnancy by seeing prenatal diagnosis and post pregnancy analysis of of pregnant women with excess amniotic fluid.METHODS:Using as cases50cases of pregnant women (17~32weeks) diagnosed with excess of amniotic fluid; data collected from July2008-july2013at Guangxi Medical University First Affiliated Hospital and were simultaneously compared to a control group of80pregnant women with normal amniotic fluid.Pregnant women diagnosed with polyhydramnios had amniotic fluid analysis or fetal cord blood karyotype analysis, and pregnant women identified as Thalassemia carriers had amniotic fluid analysis or fetal cord blood thalessemia analysis of these two groups were compared at the end of these pregnancy.RESULTS:The study points out that among the etiology of polyhydramnios, unexplained results account for44%, chromosomal abnormalities4%, thalassemic14%, fetal malformations30%, maternal fetal diseases8%. As compared to the control group, cesarean section rate, pre term birth rate, fetal malformation rate, fetal distress rate and the incidence of fetal macrosomia were higher in women diagnosed with plyhydramnios; the SD was P<0.05.CONCLUSION:Etiology of polyhydramnios remains unclear and unexplained but it is closely related to chromosomal abnormalities, fetal abnormalities and Thalessemia.Polyhydramnios results in poor pregnancy outcomes, has an impact on pregnant women and fetus and it significant increase in the rate of cesarean sections, premature birth, fetal malformation, fetal distress and fetal macrosomia, therefore pregnant women have to reinforce prenatal diagnosis, do regular checkups and monitor fetal development, providing prenatal and post natal care guidance has a great significant role in improving quality of birth.
