Background Infantile hemangiomas(IHs) are the most common congenital tumors of infancy. Since1982, Mulliken and glowacki proposed the first biological classification for vascular birthmarkst. It is clearly to distinguish a hemangioma from a vascular malformation and a structrual anomaly for IHs has a unique clinical behavior and immunohistochemical markers. Although the majority involutes spontaneously, results are unpredictable and it may need a long time. As a result, earlier management may be more strongly considered for some parents because of the tremendous psychologic pressure and the risk of functional impairment or cosmetic disfigurement. The gold standard for the treatment of infantile haemangioma has been the use of corticosteroid. Its beneficial effects have been verified by various studies. And fluorouracil as a traditional antimetabolites, its effects of inhibiting DNA synthesis and inducing apoptosis of various tumor cells have been demonstrated intensively.Purpose Infantile Hemangiomas is the commonest childhood tumour. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the efficacy of diprospan plus fluorouracil in treating infantile hemangiomas, and presents comparative study of traditional therapy with using diprospan only. Methods A total of181patients with functional impairment or cosmetic disfigurement worry were treated in our department since2012. They were randomly assigned to receive intralesional injection with diprospan plus fluorouracil, or intralesional diprospan only. We analyzed the data of110cases undergoing therapy of intralesional injection with diprospan plus fluorouracil compared with71cases with diprospan intralesional injection only. Efficacy was assesssed by performing blinded volume measurements, physical examination and photographs. The follow-up was from6months to2years after ending treatment. Results110patients were assigned to treatment group and had a reponse rate of96.36%.71patients were assigned to control group and had a reponse rate of76.05%.(P<0.01).Conclusion The policy of using Diprospan plus fluorouracil intralesional injection for IH is feasible and has received significant efficacy. The patients can tolerate with little side effects.
