Objective: To observe serum cystatin C (cys C) level in Parkinson’s disease (PD), toexplore influence of cys C on the development of PD, to analyse the influencing factors.Part I Research on serum cystatin C level in patients of Parkinson’sdiseaseMethod: A total of115PD patients and110healthy controls were included in thisstudy. The results of routine laboratory tests such as triglyceride, cholesterol, low-densitylipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), creatinine, urea, uric acid and cys Cwere assessed from fasting blood samples performed at our clinical laboratory center. Thepatients were further divided into subgroups according to Hoehn and Yahr (H&Y) stage.Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS ver17.0software.Results: Compared to controls (0.96±0.16mg/L), the mean serum level of cys C wassignificantly higher in PD patients (1.06±0.20mg/L). Spearman correlation analysesamong subjects showed a positive and significant correlation between cys C levels and ageas well as creatinine levels. Correlation was not observed between cys C level andtriglyceride, cholesterol, LDL, HDL, urea and uric acid. ANOVA analysis showed that cysC had a higher level at the middle and late stages of PD than at the early stage. Part II Research on serum cystatin C level in patients of Parkinson’sdisease with obstructive sleep apnea syndromeMethod:56patients from July2011to December2013in Neurology Department ofthe Second Affiiated Hospital of Suzhou University who were diagnosed with PD and allof whom had took the examination of polysomnography were collected. We also collected18healthy people who had took the examination of polysomnography in the same period.According to the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI),56PD patients were further divided intotwo groups: PD with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAHS) group, including26patients; PD group,including30patients. All the subjects were assessed in aspects ofgeneral conditions, movement function, biochemistry parameters, sleep parameters.Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS ver17.0software.Results: The mean serum level of cys C in PD with OSAHS group, PD group andcontrol group were1.05±0.17mg/L,0.96±0.12mg/L and0.84±0.20mg/L. Statisticalanalysis showed that there was significant difference in the three groups (F=9.184, P<0.05),and the mean serum level of cys C in PD with OSAHS group was the highest. In PD withOSAHS group, Spearman correlation analysis showed a positive and significant correlationbetween cys C level and creatinine levels, urea levels, AHI, the Oxygen Desaturation Index(ODI), the arousal index as well as H&Y stage (P<0.05).Correlation was not observedbetween cys C level and other clinical parameters (P>0.05). Multivariate analysis showedthat creatinine levels, AHI, H&Y stage may be influencial factors of cys C level(P<0.05).Conclusions: cys C level in PD patients was higher than that in healthy controls. cysC level in PD patients at middle and late stages was higher than that in PD patients at earlystage. cys C level in PD patients with OSAHS was positively correlated with degree ofhypoxia. So, cys C may be a marker to indicate neural injury.
