ObjectiveCancer has reemerged as major chronic non-communicable diseases hazard to human health. According to WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)(GLOBOCAN2008), there were12.66million new incidence cases, and7.56million new death cases in the world in2008, while there were2.82million new incidence cases, and1.96million new death cases in China. According to the third cause of death retrospective survey showed that tumor death had become the first cause of death in urban areas, the second cause in rural areas. Population-based cancer registry collects the data on cancer incidence and deaths from covered population to describe and surveillance the epidemics in certain areas. The study collected and analyzed the cancer incidences and mortalities in Zhejiang cancer registration areas during2000to2009, in order to show the cancer epidemic and trend of recent ten years in Zhejiang province, will provide scientific basis for mapping out strategies of cancer prevention and control, cancer research, cancer measures implementation and evaluation.Materials and methodsThe cancer incidence and mortality data of2000-2009was submitted from6 national cancer registrations in Zhejiang province, the6cancer registries locate in Hangzhou city, Jiaxing city, Jiashan county, Haining city, Shangyu city, and Xianju county, including2cities cancer registries and4counties cancer registries. The coverage population of6registries was60087888person-years (30445904men and29641984women) during2000to2009. Among the coverage population was9560699, accounting for20.27%of whole Zhejiang province population by the end of2009. Zhejiang Provincial Cancer Prevention and Control Office collected and sorted to analysis the crude rate, ratio, age-standardized rates, cumulative rate, cut shrinkage rate and the time trends. Data base software, including MS-Excel, SAS, and Joinpoint Regression Program4.0.0were used for data check and evaluation.ResultsThe total new cancer incidence cases were163104(males92982, females70122) in6cancer registries, sex ratio was1.33. The total new cancer death cases were95254(males61944, females33310), sex ratio was1.86. The crude incidence rate in Zhejiang cancer registration areas was271.50/105during2000to2009, while the crude mortality rate was158.56/105, mortality incidence ratio was0.58. The incidence rate was209.56/105in2000, and it increased to320.20/105in2009, increased about52.78%, with the Annual Percent Change (APC) of4.51%(95%confidence interval,3.25%~5.79%), while the mortality rate was130.61/105in2000, and it increased to176.98/105in2009, increased about35.50%, with the Annual Percent Change (APC) of3.99%(95%confidence interval,2.98%~5.01%). Among the top three incidence fastest growing were thyroid cancer, lymphoma and breast cancer, the Annual Percent Change (APC) was16.32%,9.64%and6.24%, respectively. the top three mortality fastest growing were leukemia, stomach cancer and lymphoma, the Annual Percent Change (APC) was5.09%,4.95%and4.50%, respectively. The cancer incidence rate of all cancer in Zhejiang registration areas during2000to2009was relatively lower before34years old, then increased dramatically after35years old and finally peaked after80years old (1321.44/105), then slightly decreased after85years old, compared the mortality rate increased dramatically after25years old and also peaked after80years old (1278.18/105). Lung cancer was the most common cancer in Zhejiang province, followed by stomach cancer, colorectal cancer, liver cancer, breast cancer, esophagus cancer, brain tumor, Pancreas cancer, lymphoma and bladder cancer, the10most common cancers accounted for73.66%of all new cases. Meanwhile ten of the leading causes of cancer death accounted for86.69%of all cancer death. Lung cancer was the leading cause of cancer deaths, followed by liver cancer, stomach cancer, colorectal cancer, esophagus cancer, pancreas cancer, brain tumor, leukemia, lymphoma and breast cancer. Different types of cancers occurred and deceased differently at each ages and gender. In the age group of0-14years, leukemia and brain tumor were the most common and highest mortality cancers. Among men, liver cancer was the most common and highest mortality cancer in the young age group of15-44years, while breast cancer was the leading site of cancer incidence, and stomach cancer was the leading cause of cancer deaths in female. Lung cancer became to the most common cancer in the middle age group of45-64years in men, while liver cancer was the leading cause of cancer deaths, breast cancer and lung cancer in female, respectively. In the65years old age group, lung cancer became to the leading site and cause of cancer in both sex.ConclusionAccording to our study, the cancer incidence rate of2000-2009in Zhejiang province was higher than the national average, but the mortality rate was lower than the national average level. Owing to Zhejiang province lies on the east coast of china, belongs to more economically advanced regions, cancer patients got more better diagnosis and treatment. Authorities ought to pay Emergency attention to cancer morbidity and mortality tendency. Lung cancer, liver cancer, stomach cancer, colorectal cancer, esophagus cancer and breast cancer are still the key point on cancer prevention and control in Zhejiang province. The cancer incidencerate of thyroid cancer, lymphoma, breast cancer, prostate cancer, cervical cancer, and the mortality rate of leukemia, stomach cancer, lymphoma, increased quickly should not be ignored. Effective cancer prevention and control measures should be carried out, the main crowd was middle-aged people between45to65years old. The elderly population over65years old, should take out such as health education/promotion, early treatment, standardized treatment, and rehabilitation, in order to the goal of prolonging the cancer patients life, improving the quality of life, reducing the hazards of cancer.
