Nursing adverse events are nursing-related damages which influence the outcomes of diagnosis and therapy, increase the economic burden and pain, and may lead to nrusing accident and dissension. Increasing attention has been drawn to the high incidence rate and relatively low report rate of nursing adverse events. This study aims at investigating the desire of reporting nursing adverse events in a three-level hospital in Chengdu, Sichuan Province with non-punitive voluntary error reporting system using questionnaire survey.Result:Except in situations where the damage can be concealed(for example:there is no damage to the patients or the damage is unknown to the patients and their families and is unknown to the colleagues) or cannot be concealed(for example:there is damage to the patients or the damage is known to the patients and their families or is known to the colleagues), significant difference in the desire of reporting was revealed between nurses of different length of service and post. The nurses with a length of service between2-5years and more than11years had higher desire to report nursing adverse events. And head nurses of department were the most willing to report, while the nurses had a lowest desire of reporting nursing adverse events.Defference of desire of reporting nursing adverse events also existed in different situations. In situations where the damage can be concealed, the total report rate was4.65%, and the head nurses reported most of the events. In situations where the damage cannot be concealed, the total report rate was95.41%. The major causes of low report rate was the following:1.the disclosure of the reporter and the involved nurses;2.complicated procedure;3.incomplete performance of non-punitive voluntary error reporting system. The result of this study may provide a practical guide in promoting the desire of reporting nursing adverse events in hospitals with non-punitive voluntary error reporting system. Simplification of the report procedure, keeping secret of the reporter and the involved nurses may help promote the desire of report and the practice of non-punitive voluntary error reporting system.
