Objective To observe the difference of contrast sensitivity in amblyopia patients before and after treatment and the effects of the treatments. Methods Randomly selected50physically healthy adults (100eyes, visual acuity≥1.0) as normal control group and87adult patients (121eyes) as patients group. Measure the contrast sensitivity at5spatial frequencies (1.5,3,6,12,18cycles/degree, c/d) in both normal control group and patients group respectively before and after7months of comprehensive treatment with the Optec6500Functional Visual Analyzer made by American STEREO company. Analyze the changes in contrast sensitivity values in normal control eyes and amblyopic eyes before and after treatment at different frequencies by SPSS17.0statistical software. Results:(1). In mild amblyopia patients, the contrast sensitivity curve was decreased at high spatial frequencies compared with the normal control group and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P<0.05). In moderate amblyopia patients, the CS curve was decreased at medium and low spatial frequencies, which were statistically significant (P<0.05) compared with the normal group (P<0.05). In severe amblyopia patients, The CS was lower in low, medium and high spatial frequencies compared with the control group. However, statistically significant difference was only demonstrated for the medium and high spatial frequencies, not for the low frequencies.(2). In mild amblyopia patients, the CS after treatment was obviously increased compared with the values obtained before treatment and the difference was statistically significant. But there was no statistical significance between the normal control group and the amblyopic groups. In moderate amblyopia patients, CS was significantly increased after treatment compared with values before treatment(P<0.05), but there were no statistically significant differences between the normal control group and the amblyopic patients. In severe amblyopia patients, after the treatment the CS has also got improved but the difference was not statistical significant. Neither did the change between the normal group and amblyopic group.(3). The basic recovery rates in mild, medium and severe amblyopia were61.9%(26eyes),35.0%(9eyes) and12.8%(5eyes) respectively. With P<0.01, there was obvious statistical significance. Conclusion The CS is a comprehensive and sensitive method for measuring visual function and it provides a reliable way of monitoring curative effect of adult amblyopia and guiding treatment.
