Objective: To investigate the effect of strontium mineral water combined withglimepiride on liver protection and levels of fasting blood glucose (FBG) andserum lipid in rats with type2diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Method: T2DM ratmodel was established by diet enriched in fat and glucose and intraperitonealinjection of streptozotocin (STZ). The experimental rats were divided intonormal group, model control group, strontium mineral water group, tap water+glimepiride group and strontium mineral water+glimepiride group. The levelsof fasting blood glucose were detected every week in all rats. Every two weeks,6animals were randomly selected and sacrificed from each group fordetermination of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), Low densitylipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C), High density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C)and glycosylated hemoglobin(GHb) in serum, meanwhile, liver and kidney weretaken off for pathological examination. Results: In the type2diabetes ratsmodel, fasting blood glucose were increased, while the level of TC, TG andLDL-C increased significantly, but HDL-C fell; glimepiride could decrease thelevels of FBG, TC, TGand LDL-C; Although strontium mineral water could notdecrease the level of FBG obviously, but TC,TG and LDL-C levels were lowsignificantly and HDL-C rose; Especially, hypoglycemic and lipid-loweringeffects were more significant in strontium mineral water+glimepiride group.Strontium and glimepiride may protect liver and kidney effectively and delaydegeneration of liver cell and renal tubular epithelical cell. Conclusion: It issuggested that strontium mineral water could reduce the level of serum lipid and be able to improve fat metabolism, reduce damadge to liver and kidney indiabetic rats, and further delay the progress of diabetic complications.
