Objective: To research the personality characteristics of female sexworkers and the relationship between personality characteristics withacceptability, to explore how the personality characteristics influenceacceptability, for the foundation of PrEP promotion work and AIDSprevention tasks.Methods:Respondents:1613female sex workers were recruited by snowballsampling methods in CHONG-Qing municipality,SI-Chuanprovince,GUANG-Xi province and XIN-Jiang province in western China.Research method: Self-administered questionnaire survey which wasfrom the national science and technology major projects was conductedamong the recruited1613FSWs with assistant investigators to collectinformation on HIV-related knowledge, attitude and risk behaviors, HIV preventive measures-related knowledge, attitude and acceptability of andPrEP-related knowledge and acceptability,as well as personalitycharacteristics, which was based on the Cattell-16PF Qusetionnaire (16PF)with four personality characteristics selected, including warmth, sensitivity, suspicious and self-discipline with totally fourty questions.Analysis method: Descriptive analysis for the general situation andacceptability of PrEP;t test for comparison of personality traits amongdifferent groups, and correlation analysis for the relationship betweenpersonality traits and acceptability of PrEP;univariate and multivariateLogistic regression was employed for influence factors of PrEP;exploratoryfactor analysis, correlation analysis and Kruskal-Wallis Test was used toexplore the relationship between AIDS knowledge and attitude andpreventive factors with personality traits;multivariate stepwise logisticregression analysis used to find influence personality factors ofacceptability when independent variables only retain socioeconomicvariables and personality traits because of personality traits associated withAIDS knowledge and attitude and preventive factors, which cover theinfluence of personality traits, while the dependent variable wasacceptability of PrEP.Results:1.1112FSWs(69.03%)were willing to accept PrEP in the totally1613FSWs,875FSWs (65.54%) could stick with PrEP,and FSWs focused on PrEP about "effect"(81.65%),"security"(82.11%), and the "expenses"(51.48%),while the cause they would not accept PrEP mainly concentratedin the "no risk of HIV infection (53.40%)","worry about the side effects ofdrugs (58.58%)",and" suspicious of drug’s effect"(31.39%).2. Personality traits:The statistical difference existed when personalitycharacteristics of FSWs was compared with the normal adults, the score ofwarmth and sensitivity were both higher than norm, while the score ofsuspicious and self-discipline were both lower than norm. The populationwilling to accept PrEP obtained the higher score of all the four personalitycharacteristics compared to the population not willing to accept PrEP,andalso got higher score of warmth and sensitivity factors compared to normwhile the score of suspicious and self-discipline were lower, and thepositive correlation between the four personality characteristics and theacceptability of PrEP were existed.3. The influencing factors about acceptability of PrEP: The results ofmultivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that the factorssignificantly associated with acceptability of PrEP among FSWs were:self-discipline factor and AIDS knowledge and attitude and preventivefactos such as:attitudes towards HIV patients, accepted free AIDScounseling or not, sexually transmitted disease symptoms, reject having sexwith men without condom or not, worried about the attitude of guests ifinsist on using condom or not, heard of microbicide or not, heard of post-exposure prophylaxis or not, PrEP promotion among FSWs, advisingfriends to use PrEP or not.4. Correlation between personality traits and AIDS knowledge andattitude and preventive factos:the exploratory factor analysis was used inAIDS knowledge and attitude and preventive factos and4common factorswere obtained, they were "intervention consciousness factor","crisisjudgment factor"," intervention knowledge factors" and "interventionbehavior factor". Spearman rank correlation showed that the weak positivecorrelation exist between "intervention consciousness factor" with warmthfactor, and also exist between "intervention consciousness factor","crisisjudgment factor","intervention behavior factor"and sensitivity factor.Kruskal Wallis H test showed "intervention consciousness" was differentamong different class of warmth factor, while "intervention consciousnessfactor"and"crisis judgment factor" were different among different class ofsensitivity factor.5.The influence of personality traits on acceptability of PrEP:Due topersonality traits were associated with AIDS knowledge and attitude andpreventive factors, which cover the influence of personality traits,so themultivariate stepwise logistic regression analysis used to find influencepersonality factors of acceptability when independent variables only retainsocioeconomic variables and personality traits, while the dependent variablewas acceptability of PrEP,and the results showed that the sensitivity factor, self-discipline factor, age, household register were influencing factors ofthe acceptability of PrEP.Conclusions:1. FSWs showed more enthusiasm and sensitive, get along withpeople and poor self-control and not very good to adapt to the environmentcompared to normal adults. At the same time, the personality traits ofFSWs were associated with the acceptability of PrEP,which point out thatthe attention should be paid on personality traits of FSWs group contributeto AIDS intervention implementation in promotion and propaganda ofAIDS intervention measures, the different ways of AIDS interventionpropaganda should be adopted aim at different kinds of personality traits inFSWs population.2. The Self-discipline of FSWs directly and significantly influence theacceptability of PrEP,FSWs more Self-discipline could correctly judge selfbehaviors and inclined to make decisions beneficial to own profits, whilethe warmth and sensitivity factors indirectly influenced the acceptability ofPrEP according to awareness of AIDS intervention, risk judgment andinterventions behaviors, which indicate we can improve the psychologicalcharacteristics of FSWs,promote their cognitive maturity and positiveattitude, and improve ideological awareness of AIDS prevention in AIDSprevention work, resulting in active Participation in prevention of AIDS,accepting and promoting the new AIDS intervention measures such as PrEP,and prepare for the AIDS intervention in the high risk group in theBeginnings.
