Objective:To explore the epidemiology, clinical manifestation andprognosis of children with cerebral paragonimiasis. Methods: The clinical datas of134children with cerebralparagonimiasis admitted to Children’s Hospital of Chongqing MedicalUniversity from January2003to January2013were retrospectivelyanalysed. Results:In the136cases, there were106boys and30girls. The meanage was7.94years.118cases were from countryside. There were105children ate raw crabs before admitted to hospital. The clinical manifestationwere diversity, including headache, vomiting, seizures, hemiplegia, facialparalysis, aphasia and fever. Peripheral blood eosinophials were mildly ormoderately elevated. The most common and typical imaging of cranial CT orMRI was irregular hemorrhage(patchy, punctuate or linear) with obviousedema, and showed single or multiple ring-like enhancing lesions.28manifestated as intracranial hematoma. The initial symptom of88.24%relieved completely after treatment with a course of praziquantel, surgeryand mannitol, but no significant change in peripheral blood eosinophials. However, peripheral blood eosinophials decreased after two course ofpraziquantel.In48cases that were followed up,45cases relieved completely,3cases still remained with paresthesia and weakness of limb. Conclusions: Epidemiology, the numbers of peripheral bloodeosinophials, positive results of paragonimus immunology test and cranialCT or MRI are important to diagnose in the early stage. Peripheral bloodeosinophials is not a good parameter to evaluate therapeutic effects in theshort term. Cerebral paragonimiasis with good prognosis,if treated in theearly stage.
