Along with the ever-inceasing improvement of people’s living standard and the gradualextension of life span, the requirement for dental health is increasingly demanding. Tooth wear is adental concern for people of all ages, which has become one of the most common types of damagethat occurs in the mouth, attracting the attentions of more and more researchers. Based on thoroughresearch on visual simulation technique, this paper puts forward a simulation algorithm for tooth wearby grafting the technique of three-dimensional morphing to the problem. The main works of thispaper is as follows:(1) A salient critical points extraction algorithm for tooth model is proposed based on Morsetheory and mesh saliency. First we choose a real-valued function on the manifold as Morse function, and then compute the real function value on each vertex and the saliency is obtained by using acenter-surround filter operator on Gussian-weighted average of the scalar of vertices; Lastly, utilizingthe computed saliency and Morse theory we realized the salient critical points extraction. The methodproves to be effective and robust and possesses good anti-noise property.(2) The linear transition from a whole tooth to a worn tooth is realized by using3D morphingtechnique. By using the feature points extracted above as constraints and adopting a method based onan implicit function and the well-known mesh smoothing scheme, the consistent meshes areeffectively achieved; and then the dual-linear interpolation algorithm based on a modified Laplaciancoordinates is applied to achieve the interpolation between meshes, which avoids shrinkage and kinkseffectively.(3) A non-linear tooth wear simulation algorithm based on kinetic control technique is proposedand the kinetic control function for tooth wear is studied; Non-uniform tooth wear simulation basedon local morph is investigated and the feasibility of the application of local morph to non-uniformtooth wear simulation is demonstrated.
