Objective: To study the characteristics and clinical outcomes of total hip arthroplasty(THA) in patients with ankylosed hip, especially with bony ankylosis in non-functionalposition. Methods:65patients (70hips) with AH underwent THA from February2002toJuly2012were reviewed retrospectively. All of the patients were followed-up.Radiographic and clinical evaluations were taken at1month,3months,6months,1yearafter operation and then once a year postoperatively. All patients were evaluated usingHarris score standardization. The average score was41.3±15.8. The hips were flexiondeformity and hip flexion was31.4°, abduction and adduction limited. Results: Theaverage time of the operation was108.4minutes (ranging from90to120minutes). All ofthese patients were followed for average80months (ranging from21to123months). Theaverage Harris score was86.5±13.4at the latest follow-up, and there was statisticaldifference compared with the preoperative score (P<0.05). Hip flexion increased to82°,adduction to14°, abduction to13°, internal rotation to14°, external rotation to18°.59patients (61hips) were satisfied and they were able to live by themselves.3patients (5hips) were dissatisfied and their lives could not provide for themselves. The rate ofexcellent and good was87.1%.Conclusion: The THA is a very effective treatment forpatients with AH. The perfect rehabilitation care is one of the main factors influencing theoutcomes of THA for patients with AH.
