Objective:Because of various reasons, the number of impoverished college students is increasing year by year.The impoverished college students suffered a series of impact and pressure which brought by the rapid change of modern society and culture. Among the variety of problems of impoverished college students, the inferiority is the dominating one. Under this background, there is an increasing importance of finding an effective solution. Researches on the feeling of inferiority problems of impoverished college students are not efficient to find an effective psychological intervention method.In our research, NaiKan Cognitive Therapy was used for the first time as a psychological intervention on the impoverished college students,and the effectiveness was evaluated.We also investigated the mechanism.Methods:In April of2012, part of the students in Tianjin Medical University were surveyed using feelings of inadequacy scale (FIS).We identified60volunteers of impoverished college students who scored no more than144points in the FIS test and voluntarily participated in this study.Then they were randomly assigned to two groups according to the random number table,30subjects in control group and30subjects in study group. The latter group received7consecutive days of the Naikan Cognitive Therapy (NCT), while the control group participated in daily mental health education. They were both assessed before and after treatment, the evaluation tools include Feelings of Inadequacy Scale Personal (FIS),Personal Evaluation Inventory (PEI),Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS),Social Avoidance and Distress Scale (SAD),The Automatic Thoughts Questionnaire (ATQ)Results:Before the intervention,there were no significant differences between the two groups in general as well as the evaluation index.①A significant increase occurred in FIS total score and factor scores in study group (P<0.01); An increase occurred in FIS total score, self-esteem factor score and social confidence factor score in control group(P<0.05); After intervention, FIS total score, social confidence factor score,learning ability score and appearance factor score were significantly higher in study group than that in control group (P<0.05).②PEI score after intervention increased significantly compared with that of pre-intervention (P<0.01); Furthermore, PEI score was significantly higher than that of the control group.③A significant decrease occurred in SAD total score and factor scores in study group (P<0.01),SAD total score and factor scores before and after the intervention of the control group had no significant difference④A significant increase occurred in PSSS total score and factor scores in study group (P<0.01),PSSS total score and factor scores before and after the intervention of the control group had no significant difference.⑤A significant decrease occurred in ATQ total score in study group; After intervention,there was significant difference in ATQ total score in control groupConclusions:①NCT can significantly improve the problem of inferiority of impoverished college students,and has a better effectiveness than the daily mental health education;②NCT can significantly improve the self-evaluation of impoverished college students,and helps them to objectively regard self-performance and evaluation of others;③NCT can improve social anxiety and relationships of impoverished college students;④NCT can help the impoverished college students to improve the level of realization of social support;⑤NCT can significantly decrease the level of automatic thoughts of the impoverished college students;⑥This research confirmed that NCT as a time-saving and easy-manipulating method has a broad applicable prospect to inferiority of the impoverished college students.
