Statement:The ability of an orthodontist to identify the sagittal differences between the maxillary&mandibular apical bases which is commonly evaluated by means of the angle ANB or alternatively by means of Wits appraisal can be one of the most important factors for proper orthodontic diagnosis and making treatment plan.Purpose:To evaluate the Wits measurement as compared to ANB angle for identifying the anteroposterior skeletal discrepancy between maxilla&mandible and to determine the normal Wits value suitable for Caucasian descent whether it is applicable or not on the Chinese teenagers distributed according to sex, age and mal occlusion variations.Methodology:Lateral cephalograms of a sample of100subjects were taken in consideration where43were males&57were females in numbers. Those subjects were divided according to gender (male&female), age group (68patients of13to15years&32patients of16to19years) and types of malocclusion (class Ⅰ, class Ⅱ&class Ⅲ). Statistical analyses were done by t-test (two independent sample) to detect the differences between the two sex groups and also between the two age groups. One way ANOVA (analysis of variance) was applied to evaluate the differences within the group of malocclusion classification. In the group based on malocclusion41patients had class Ⅰ,40patients had class Ⅱ&19patients had class Ⅲ type of occlusion. The results were statistically significant when P<0.05. Few results became also significant as compared to the level of p<0.01. Outcome of data analyses:Cephalometric measurements among Chinese teenagers showed statistically significant differences of some values. They are as follows:1. Gender group:UFH, LFH, TFH, SN.2. Age group:LFH, L/TFHP3. Malocclusion group:SNAConcluding Result:1. International standardized Wits value of-1.0millimeter for males can be applicable to the males of Chinese teenagers as their average Wits measurements were also found the same in this study2. International standardized Wits value of0.0millimeter for females can’t be applicable to the females of Chinese teenagers as their mean value of Wits measurements were found to be-1.2millimeters in this study probably due to the slight skeletal retrognathism in maxilla in case of females in Chinese descent3. The difference between the Wits appraisal of Chinese male&female teenage patients is found to be-0.2millimeter which can’t be considered as a major difference. So the existence of Caucasian value of a one millimeter discrepancy should be modified to-0.2millimeter if we want to apply this on teenage patients of Chinese population.
