Objective: To compare the clinical effects of locking plates and interlockingintramedullary nails in treatment of two-part proximal humeral surgical neck fracturesin aged patients. Methods: From March2006to February2010,the records of46cases agedpatients with two-part proximal humeral surgical neck fractures for two kinds ofdifferent treatment were reviewed:open reduction and internal fixation with LockingProximal Humeral Plate (24cases), closed reduction and internal fixation withInterlocking Intramedullary Nail (22cases).Operating time, bleeding volume, fracturehealing time, incidence of complications and Neer shoulder score were compared withdifferent methods. Results: All of the46patients were followed up for12~18(mean,15) months.Compared to locking plates group, interlocking intramedullary nails group was lower inthe Operating time (P<0.05),and significantly less in bleeding volume (P<0.01). Therewere no significant difference in fracture healing time, incidence of complications andNeer shoulder score between the two groups (P>0.05).Conclusions: The clinical results of using locking plates and interlockingintramedullary nails in treatment of two-part proximal humeral surgical neck fracturesin aged patients were found to be satisfactory. There were no significant difference inincidence of complications and Neer shoulder score between the two internal fixationmethods.
