Objective To investigate the effects of a12-week intradialytic aerobic exercise on theoxidative stress and quality of life in maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients,in order toguide the clinical practice of exercise in dialysis patients.Methods27MHD patients from the hemodialysis center of Shenzhen People’s Hospital wererecruited for exercise group. Other27patients were selected as the control group. A12-weekintradialytic aerobic exercise program in which subjects exercised3times a week (cycleergometer, mini-stepper) for45minutes in each of the first2hours of hemodialysis, and thecontrol group did not take any intervention. The prescription of exercise intensity was based onBorg’s Perceived Exertion Scale. General information, the oxidative stress indicators, and TheMedical Outcomes Study Short Form36-item (SF-36) questionnaire were performed at baselineand following the intervention. Results No serious adverse events happened in all subjects during the test. After12-weekintradialytic aerobic exercise, serum advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP) significantlydecreased from21.97±3.04μmol/L to18.12±2.76μmol/L (p<0.001), and malondialdehyde(MDA) decresed from3.96±0.58mmol/L to3.15±0.60mmol/L (p<0.001),serum glutathioneperoxidase (GSH-PX) significantly increased from359.29±43.80U/L to522.49±68.43U/L(p<0.001), superoxide dismutase (SOD) increased from271.21±31.74U/mL to385.75±49.52U/mL(p<0.001); while these parameters did not change significantly in patients of thecontrol group (P>0.05). Significant improvement in physical function (PF), bodily pain (BP),general health (GH)and physical component scale(PCS) was obtained in patients of treated group, while the role physical (RP), vitality (VT), social function (SF), role emotional (RE),mentalhealth (MH) and mental component scale remained unchanged. Conclusion A12-week intradialytic aerobic exercise could reduce the oxidative stressproducts, enhance the ability of anti-oxidative stress and improve the quality of life in MHDpatients. No severe advers effects were found.
