Objective To detect the development of optical radiations (ORs) and corpus callosum (CC)in adult patient with monocular anisometropic amblyopia and compare the changes before andafter treatment by Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) scanning. Thus, explore the underlyingmechanism and evaluate the effect after treatment of adult amblyopia.Methods12adults with monocular anisometropic amblyopia and10normally adultsunderwent DTI. Sex and age are matched in these two groups. Compute the fractionalanisotropic (FA) values and the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values of ORs and CC bymanual placement ROIs. The FA values and ADC values of were compared between ispsilateralORs and contralateral ORs in the patients with amblyopia and between amblyopia group andnormal control group of ORs and CC. After six month’s comprehensive treatment of amblyopic, then scan the DTI again. Compare the eyesight and DTI parameters after treatment and tounderstand the tendency of changing and evaluate the effect of treatment preliminarily.Results1. Significant decreases in the FA values of ispsilateral ORs compared with those ofcontralateral in amblyopia group (P﹤0.05), while ADC values have no statistical difference (P﹥0.05).2. Both the FA values and ADC values of bilateral ORs have statistical differencecompared with that of normal control group (P﹤0.05). No difference in the FA values andADC values of genu of CC between the two groups(P﹥0.05). No difference in The FA valuesof splenium of CC in adult with amblyopia compared with those of normal control group (P﹥0.05). while the ADC values have statistical differenc(eP﹤0.05).3. The eyesight and FA valuesof bilateral ORs have an increasing trend after six month’s treatment, while the ADC values isdecreasing.Conclusions1. DTI can noninvasively reveal the changes of white matter fibers of ORs andCC, so it can provides a new method for studying of the underlying mechanism of amblyopia.2.The underdevelopment of ORs and splenium corporis callosi may cause the low visual functions of amblyopia.3. DTI can provide a new way for judging the clinical treatment effect of adultpatient with monocular anisometropic amblyopia.
