People in the Tang Dynasty have made a great progress on the flower planting which has some achievements in the former generations, and the flower planting played a more important role in people’s life compared to former dynasty. Studying on the flowers in the Tang Dynasty not only makes us a better understanding of general development situation at that time, but also deepens our understanding of the historical development of Chinese flowers. Moreover, it provides us valuable historical references and lessons that can be used in today’s innovations of flower industry.The developments of flower planting in the Tang Dynasty are mainly reflected as follows:Firstly, the flowers have large varieties and wide distributions. There are73species in the Tang Dynasty. Considering shapes, purposes, and growing conditions of the flowers, there are a lot of flower varieties. Specifically, flower varieties are also rich in every state (government) and other the ways. The coverage rate of flower planting is high, and several flower varieties distribute widely. Flowers planting has obvious distinction between different regions, and it forms relatively characteristic planting areas. Compared to the early Tang Dynasty, the flower varieties in the late Tang Dynasty change and increase greatly. Secondly, as a result of the growth of the prosperous flowers planting industry, specialized flower growers and florists living on flowers planting appear. Thirdly, the grafting technology has already become quite mature in the Tang Dynasty. Phenomenon of flowers’transplant is much more popular. Fourth, both the introduction of foreign flower varieties and the cultivation of wild flower varieties promote the emergences of new flower varieties.The commercialization of flower planting in the Tang Dynasty is mainly reflected in:Large-scale planting makes a further progress and the planting scale becomes larger. Flowers have become ingredients of staple and non-staple food, beverages, as well as medical and health care products. The number of flower sellers increases rapidly. Self-employed peddler have appeared since the Tang Dynasty. The flower varieties which launched on the market include a wide variety. The flower growers sell both fresh flowers and flower saplings, including their own plants, as well as wild ones. Along with the increase in demands, buying and selling of flower planting, the special flower trading places-flower markets emerge in some big cities.Flower planting and commercialization in the Tang Dynasty has a great impact on the social life at that time. On one hand, it beautifies people’s life. Flower planting becomes an important decoration of living environment. The wearing flowers becomes a prevailing part of personal accessories. Potted flowers, bonsai flowers and vase flowers appear in the Tang Dynasty, which promote the development of the flower planting art. Flower planting turns out to be important materials for festivals and folk-customs. On the other hand, it promotes the prosperity of culture and art. Flower planting becomes a popular object which is sung and recited by poets. A large number of flowers poetries and books show up. Additionally, flower planting turns into an important material in painting, arts and crafts.
