Pigments of five red plant leaves were qualitative identified using of thin layerchromatography, color characteristic reaction, UV photo-spectrometer and high performanceliquid chromatography; and quantitative analysized using of HPLC-DAD. Preliminaryillustrates the five red coloring mechanism of the plant leaf. Results were as follows:Cyanidin and its derivatives is main reason for the red leaves of five red plants. Flavones, flavonols and carotenoids as co-pigments contributed to the red leaves, Berberis thunbergii cv.atropurpurea leaves contains cyanidin(Cy), cyanidin-galactoside(Cy-gal) and traces ofpetunidin(Pt);the amount of cyanidin(Cy), cyanidin-galactoside(Cy-gal) affected the redleaves of Malus ’Royalty’; cyanidin(Cy), cyanidin-galactoside(Cy-gal), pelargonidin(Pg) anddephinidin(Dp) contributed to the Prunus persica ’Atropurpurea’ red leaves; Prunus ceraiferacv. Pissardii contains cyanidin(Cy), cyanidin-galactoside(Cy-gal), cyanidin-rutin(Cy-ru),Arabinopyranoside(Arab), pelargonidin(Pg) and dephinidin(Dp); cyanidin(Cy),cyanidin-galactoside(Cy-gal), cyanidin-rutin(Cy-ru) and petunidin(Pt) affected the redleaves of Acer palmatum cv. Atropuceum. The content of chlorophyll and anthocyanins contrast obvious effects of leaf color.Anthocyanins were synthesized under the condition of sufficient sunlight. The mechanismleading to the place with enough light for anthocyanins present red predominate rather thanchlorophyll. Where the light is weak, cause more chlorophyll content than anthocyanins andgreen as the dominant color. And when the proportion is quite, green and red as thecomplementary color, overlapping, make blade to develop in the direction of deep purple.Five species of red leaves in the middle of May collected from the campus of NorthwestAgriculture and Forestry University. When the collection of Malus ’Royalty’ and Berberisthunbergii ’atropurpurea’ leaves showed red, and Prunus ceraifera cv. Pissardii, Prunuspersica ’Atropurpurea’, Acer palmatum cv. Atropuceum leaves showed deep purple red.Inaddition to the anthocyanins composition difference, the content ratio of chlorophyll andanthocyanins has a great influence on leaf color. When the ratio of anthocyanins andchlorophyll is less than two times, the leading role of anthocyanins decreased, the leavesshowed deep purple red.Conversely, the blade is red.
