Shelling is of the greatest labor strength in the procession. Shelling by hand is the most widely used now. As it’s insanitary, inefficient, easy to hurt hands and the seeds, the lotus seeds were limited to plant. Nowadays, shelling machine was designed but could not realize the functions of seed cutting and shelling effectively. In view of the low efficiency, high damage rate, poor universality and stability exist in the lotus seed shelling machine, a new type of lotus seed shelling machine that based on the principle of rolling-cut was designed. The method of lotus seed cutting and synchronous shelling was improved by the innovative design. The machine was designed via the intermittent movement of geneva mechanism and made the movement more effective. The main contents are as follows:1) The physical characteristics, such as weight, thickness and length of the shell, had been researched and the results showed that the average weight of the seed is1.554g. The length of major axis is in the range of18.12-24.88mm with23.06mm in average. About80%of the seeds range from20.00to24.00mm; the length of minor axis is in the range of14.23-19.45mm with17.53mm in average. About90%of the seeds range from16.00to19.00mm.2) A new type of lotus seed shelling machine of rolling-cut type that consists of feeding mechanism, conveying mechanism, cutting mechanism, shelling mechanism was designed.3) Simulation of shelling was achieved via ADAMS and the influence of dial sell and roller was pointed out. When the speed of dial sell and roller increase, the angular velocity of seed has also increased. The dial sell is more influence than roller.The tool can complete the circumcision of the lotus.4) Single factor test and orthogonal experiment of this new machine were achieved. The results showed that The shelling rate of the lotus seed sheller is91%and the demage rate is2%when the dial sell speed is35r/min, the rubbing roller speed is80r/min and the rool speed is250r/min. In addition, the elements could be ranked according to their influencing degree as dial sell speed, rubbing roller speed and than the tool speed.
