Archway is the unique iconic sketch building of China. It is the symbol of Chinese classicarchitecture. Its architectural form and appearance shape is different from other buildings.It hasthe unique artistic charm and the higher aesthetic value, it also has very extensive socialfunction and precious historical cultural value.Chinese traditional garden is the artistictreasures with national characteristics. It has a long history and profound cultural background.It also combines a variety of art forms and disciplines in a body. Garden archway is formed bythe combination of archway and Chinese traditional garden.It is a unique archway type, and itis an important factor in Chinese gardening with the rich landscaping art.The research object of this article is the archways of Summer Palace and Beihai Park inBeijing. Based on the analysis of the existing archway examples, this article explored theunique landscaping art of garden archway. First of all, we summarized the unique status of thearchway and expounded the origin and evolution of the shape and function of the archwayaccording to the literature. Secondly, on the basis of this theory, we discussed the classificationand the architectural art of the archway; Meanwhile we lead to the concept of the gardenarchway, and explained the generation and characteristics of the garden archway. Then, westudied the archways of the Summer Palace and Beihai Park systematically. In this study, wefocused on the architectural landscaping art and the space landscaping art of the gardenarchways, summarized the results and do a comparative analysis of the results. Finally, weproposed a new idea of the garden archway design application on the basis of theoreticalresearch and case analysis to make the garden archway can be widely applied in theconstruction of modern landscape architecture.In short, this paper adhered to the principle of combining theory with examples,expounded the theory of the archway and Chinese traditional garden, analyzed the landscaping art of the archway specifically. We hope can through the study shows the characteristics of thegarden gate and be innovative in many aspects.
