Chinese Traditional Garden has a long history. People always pay more attention to Traditional Garden, because of its aesthetic ideas and artistic attainments. Chinese Modern Garden is a new landscape form for the demand of modern people’s life. However, in recent years an increasing number of foreign gardens have appeared in China, such as Mediterranean Style, European Style, the North American Style and so on, which may possibly result in the lost of traditional culture in gardening.Guozhuang garden is a typical traditional garden in Hangzhou, which is known as "the best classical garden of the West Lake" and fully embodies the traditional Chinese gardening skills. While the West Lake Four-Season Hotel garden is a representative of Chinese Modern garden, which has the basic architecture of traditional Chinese gardens and combines the elements of foreign gardens. This paper attempts to respectively analysis the landscape characteristics of Guozhuang garden and the West Lake Four-Season Hotel garden, such as overall layout, plant landscaping and water management. It interpret the landscape construction skills of Chinese Traditional Garden and Modern Garden, in order to sum up the characteristics of Chinese Traditional Garden and Modern Garden and finally explore the possibilities of traditional gardening skills used in modern garden design.This paper regards Guozhuang garden and the West Lake Four-Season Hotel garden as clues, and focuses on the inheritance and innovation in Chinese Modern garden. More specifically, the forth chapter deeply analyzes the inherited skills including the spatial organization, color feature, artistic attainments, and the innovative forms including water management, new space form, plant landscaping, landscape elements, both of which are used in modern garden design. Thus, Chinese Modern Garden design has not only inherited the traditional skills, but also promoted innovation and combined the landscape and function. This paper could be a reference for Chinese Modern Garden development in the future.
