Building pagodas has a long history in the Beijing area. As early as the Eastern Wei,Northern Qi period, there had pagoda construction activities. Types of the existing ancientpagodas is rich, mainly include pavilion, dense eaves, cone-shaped bouquet, dharani pillars,combination, lamaist bottle, diamond throne and crossing road. Pagodas from Tang dynasty tothe Qing dynasty have physical remains in large quantities. According to incomplete statisticsof the author, the amount of ancient pagodas in Beijing is at least200, which are mainlydistributed in west and southwest mountain area. Currently, there is still a lack of systemresearch of it, so that its historical value, artistic value and value of science and technology isnot fully reflected. It’s regret that many pagodas were secondary damaged in repair.In this paper, ancient pagodas in Beijing will be expounded in five aspects bysummarizing the domestic and foreign related research literature, selecting the typicalexamples in Beijing area as the research object and through the field photograph, observation,measurement, record, sorting a comparative study on survey data and relevant historicaldocuments: First is ancient pagodas overview in Beijing, a brief introduction to the status quo,the origin and the natural environment and social background in development; the second isthe development history of the ancient pagodas in Beijing, expounding from the aspects ofdevelopment of religious and political change; the third is the siting of pagodas, focuses onthe relationship between buddhist temple with the city and the landscape environment, and therelationship between pagodas and the buddhist temple; the fourth is the classification ofpagodas, expounding the characteristics of pagodas in various dynasties from the perspectiveof typology and semiotics; the fifth is the structure of pagodas,dividing the pagoda into threepart,the top,the body and the base,then discuss it in detail. All above is to summarize thedevelopment, characteristics and construction methods of ancient pagodas in Beijing in allprevious dynasties, providing the basis for the pagoda architectural heritage protection andwood structure building evolution.
