Large amount historical buildings in Suzhou have protected by government forremaining the cultural value of them. These buildings listed in the control protectioncategory. However, with the rapid change and improvement of current lifestyle, thesefunctions of old buildings cannot satisfy the demands, neither internal nor external qualityof living environment nor function layout of modern life. Nowadays, an efficient, effectiveand future technology-orientated living style has expected, which results in a renewaldesign of the historical buildings in Suzhou. Renewal design considered as the one of thefastest and most convenient method to meet the need of modernization in current society.The specificity of the renewal design for the buildings listed in the control protectioncategory has identified, which is updating the design by following premise of protectionmaintaining. This research attempts to explain the exploration of method that can adjustand enhances the internal function and space use of those historical buildings while thehistorical features and architectural structures of these protected building can still bemaintained.Five chapters have stated in this report. In the first chapter, the feasibility andnecessity of renovating the protected buildings in Suzhou have discussed which based onthe study of the protected buildings development condition. In the following chapter, theprinciples of protected buildings renewal design haven been identified according to thesurvey of the protected architectures. The third chapter expounds the methods of renewaldesign of the protected buildings in line accordance with the principles mentioned inchapter two. Case study has identified in fourth chapter, which discusses and practices twodifferent methods of protected buildings renewal design. The further discussion ofredesigning the protected buildings in Suzhou has provided in the last chapter. This reportaims to improve the future design of the protected buildings in Suzhou to achieving afurther thinking and understanding that relates to the better protection and utilization of thehistorical buildings in Suzhou.
