Based on the case that our country is basking in a great boom in economy and that there will be more city construction, the number and the size of the cities are expanding rapidly while urban problems need to be addressed. In this case, the new urban design concept and development of theory come into being. The theory of sustainable development has been recognized worldwide, and then the world set off a wave of eco-city construction. People are considering more on the construction of the urban ecological environment. With the improvement of living conditions, the city residents’life has been gradually entering a new stage. Under the condition that getting closer to the nature has become an indispensable part of people’s daily life, the urban open space is the best choice for people. Urban open space refers to the region which is open to the public and has a range of public facilities, a certain scale of the natural or humane intention. In additions to ecological function, and landscape function, urban open space is also a solid foundation for the sustainable development of city.Huaihua city is a representative city of rapid urbanization in the economically undeveloped poverty stricken areas in China, so the research on Huaihua city’s open space has a very important significance. In this paper, open space is classified into three categories and nine subcategories. I adopt the method of quantitative analysis to the study of Hecheng district’s open space, and I find that Hecheng district’s open space which does not form a complete system shows an imbalanced distribution pattern. This article analyses the factors influence the characteristics of Hecheng district’s landscape pattern and in the research I find that the main power to change the spatial pattern is the expansion of the city. I put forward several targeted advices by analyzing the main problems in the characteristics of Hecheng district’s landscape pattern. The planning and construction of open space has gradually become an important issue in many cities of our country, but our country has not yet formed a complete system analysis methods and evaluation system of open space. Different scholars conduct research on many cities from different perspectives, and this article focus on Hecheng district to provide references for the construction of open space in other cities.
