RCC (Roller Compacted Concrete) dams have been widely used in the field of hydraulic engineering in recent years. The construction scale of RCC dams in China extends fast and the construction technique is in the international advanced level. However, as the geological exploration technology continues to progress, the safety monitoring technology of RCC dams develop, and more engineering experience has been accumulated and summarized, we still need to deepen the understanding of RCC material properties and take advantage of computers and numerical analysis softwares so that we can solve the new and tough problems of high-dam construction. The elasto-plastic finite element method analysis of RCC dams helps in progressive failure process analysis and safety reserves of dams in extreme conditions such as earthquakes. Thus the current dam design will be promoted and more effective. Since the stiff concrete is placed in thin layer and without longitudinal joint, the RCC dams contain many transfer surfaces. Based on this characteristic, the RCC dams are regarded as transversely isotropic. In this article, a new elasto-plastic analysis theoretical model and its numerical simulation method are presented. Firstly, a failure criteria basing on Drucker-Prager yield criterion for geomaterials is modified in terms of the inherent anisotropy of the friction angle and the dilation angle. Then the corresponding consistent return mapping algorithm is formulated and the consistent elasto-plastic tangent modulus matrix is obtained. To implement the model in a numerical way, Then, the codes are introduced into finite element software ABAQUS via the UMAT. The model and program are verified to be reliable and effective through different ways and two numerical examples are presented in this article.
