| Waterfront space in old town is a construction area full with charming ecosystem and reflecting city’s culture characteristics. The area provides unique opportunities for development of a modern city with extremely limited resource, although it brings specific problems and challenges to the revitalization and reconstruction of old town. With the development of economy, revitalization design of waterfront space in old city eventually become hotspot of city construction, but numerous revitalization not only designs bring damage to ecological environment of the city but also induce unprecedented social, cultural and economic problems, hampering city’s sustainable development. As the footprint of city development carrying historical changes, waterfront space in old town should behave as an area where human being activities strongly interact with nature, attracting residents by its unique natural and landscape resources and bearing impact from rapid urbanization. However, old town of a city always display as being crowed, poor transportation and decreasing environmental living quality, induced by high population density, ill-conditioned infrastructure and mixes of old and new living areas and industry area. The features of waterfront space are important part of the image of a city, showing city’s character and reflecting city’s history, culture and civilization. For a city with long history and propensity nature resources, sustainable revitalization and development plays key role in construction process. Other than other area of the city, old town waterfront space’s revitalization can benefit the city by behaving as trademark of the city and largely attracting travelers, thus the potential value of city is increased.Theories and practical experiences of revitalization of old town waterfront space in advanced countries and regions were summarized in this paper. The historical change of waterfront space in China was also illustrated. Analysis and solutions of current problems were provided from different aspects of sustainable development. Combination of local feature, multi-function, human activities and management service was considered in our solutions, that’s to say, equilibrium sustainable development can be achieved through revitalization design of waterfront space. Our paper also discussed methodologies of old town waterfront space design, potentially provided valuable references to engineers, real estate contractors and decision makers in government.
