Giancarlo De Carlo (1919-2005), one of Italian architects, is a well-known architect, planner, educator, editor, writer, speaker, thinker and reformer.1993RIBA Gold Medalawarded him, which gave a great affirmation to De Carlo’s contribution to modernarchitecture, but also set up his position of the Modern Architecture. As the first generation of architects after World War II, Giancarlo De Carlo has beenkeeping in working to promote social progress and improving people’s living environment. Asthe key figure of Team10, his critical spirit of modern architecture and humanity is worthlearning. As a pioneer of the Italian Neo-rationalism, he focused on rational treatment of theconflict between modern architecture and the regional context. We can learn from the way hethought and designed. His regional practice and his conceptions of "reading”,“Architecture’spublic","two kinds of participation" are still instructive and valuable to current Chineseconstruction industryThis thesis takes De Carlo as a reference object. Begin with the introduction of hisbackground and career journey (including architectural career and education), and exploringthe formation of its main ideological background, and then take his understandings of therelationship between architecture and context and the relationship between architecture andhuman as clues to grasp his soul. Finally, I wound analyze some of his representative worksand try to summarize his thoughts. I hope this thesis will be a critical but also instructivereference to current Chinese practice.
