Today marine rights and interests competition more fierce, as a communication andmeasurement equipment, sonar is highly valued by all countries and promotes the progress ofthe technology of underwater acoustic greatly. Towed array sonar is a new type of sonarequipment associated with the development of underwater acoustic technology.Currently, researching on Towed array sonar is one of the hot area in sonar research field. This type of sonar has many advantages, such as low operating frequency, far operatingdistance, Small platform interference, Large array size, Adjustable working depth. Even so,there are still some inadequacies. As a Flexible cable, the towed array is affected by theplatform maneuver and Ocean current which lead to distortion. The vertical aperture ofhydrophone is small, which makes it difficult to obtain the depth information of the object. Most importantly, serious port/starboard ambiguity exists in Single line array, which restrictsthe performance of towed line array sonar. This article focused on the array shape and port/starboard discrimination in towed linearray. First, based on a true single line array application, this paper presented single headingsensor shape forecast algorithm and fluid mechanics shape estimation algorithm, analysisedthe meaning of main parameters and its impact in algorithm, settled on the simulationparameters and the key simulation points, reached a conclusion by mathematical modelingand simulation on measured data at sea with MATLAB and VC++6.0tools. Then, on thebasis of shape estimation, this paper researched port/starboard discrimination method intowed Line Array, presented an automatic decision algorithm based on the known shape ofsingle-line array starboard, analysised the impact on port/starboard discrimination detectionprobability of main parameters, demonstrated the validity of this method with measured databy using MATLAB modeling and simulation.
