Ship maintenance management is always an essential aspect of ship technical management. Nowadays the global shipping market is under great pressure from excess capacity and low freight rates of the market. As for shipping companies, all they need to do is to be active of operation management and cost controlling. It is the time when ship maintenance controlling and management is gaining more and more concern among the managers. For one thing, a ship is well repaired and maintained can not only enhance the operational safety but also can extend its lifetime. For another, ship operational rate will be maximized by minimizing its total maintenance time and maximizing its maintenance intervals, and then gain more profits for the company. What’s more, better controlling about maintenance processes can decrease ship operational cost largely and produce benefits. In this paper I’m trying to spotlight a reliability-and-economy-centered maintenance concept and express some new thoughts about ship maintenance management and cost controlling method such as how to make a perfect repairing plan and a decision for which repair yard to go, how to make a proper adjustment about the circulation of maintenance, how to find satisfactory solutions about different mechanical failures and how to calculate the right time of machine repairing and parts replacing. At the same time, it is essential to carry on risk assessment and controlling during the whole period of ship repair and maintenance.Research is also done on the point of ship maintenance system which is being implementing in shipping companies. By studying pools of information and adding in with my years’working experience as a chief engineer I pointed out some notable and common problems which existing in the ship maintenance systems of shipping companies, and put an end to this paper by coming up with several corresponding solutions.
