Clutch is an important component ensuring a smooth start for vehicle when loadingtorque, reducing shift shock and vibration and noise of power train system. The vibrationproduced in the clutch area in a car generally occurs during start-up and shift stage, that is, theclutch engagement stage, when speed difference exists between the engine and the gearbox.The drive wheels convert the rotating vibrations of the drive train to a longitudinal vibrationof the vehicle. The chatter is expressed as a vibration in the longitudinal direction of thevehicle and is transferred via the operating elements and platform and driver’s seat. The driversenses unpleasant vibrations, which can also be connected to noises.Start-up working condition is generally the most common conditions of vehicle, underwhich people will be more sensitive to the chatter. The vehicle chatter produced in clutchtends to leave drivers a bad impression. Taking into account our domestic situation, there aremany tests for clutch products but few performance testing on the full vehicle that with clutchmounted, without related evaluation criteria about clutch jitter and occupants comfort.In this paper, for better performance matching of Ningbo Hongxie Clutch Co., Ltd, westart from testing and analysis of jitter during clutch engagement condition and finallyestablish a clutch jitter evaluation criteria. Start-up jitter of a variety of test-passenger cars aremainly discussed and studied in this paper. For verification of the mechanism of clutch chatter,MATLAB simulation is used. To find influence factors of clutch chatter, vehicle experimentsare performed. To establish jitter evaluation, using a combination of subjective and objectivetesting program. Finally, the objective test data is combined with test driver’s subjectivefeelings, commonly evaluates starting jitter problems of the test vehicle, to establishcomprehensive evaluation system. Data obtained from vibration tests can provide quantitativereference for Ningbo Hongxie Clutch Co., Ltd when solving clutch engagement chatterproblems.
