Plants are closely related to history, politics, economy and culture in ancientChina. Zhejiang, with its beautiful scenery and lush vegetation gives birth to a numberof suburban scenic areas, in which the plant landscape as an indispensible part has animportant role to play. Today, with the development of landscape architecture, theplanting design of plants gradually is deviating from its traditional philosophy knownas “imitating the nature”. Beginning with analyzing the plant landscape of suburbanscenic area in Zhejiang Province, the research is to explore the existing models of theplant landscape and the cultural connotation behind. The paper is developed asfollows:(1) The literature review briefly introduces the source of the selected topic of thethesis, the significance of the research and an overview of the latest domestic andforeign research trends.(2) Based on the last government record of each of the11prefectures in Zhejiangin Qing dynasty, the statistic, mainly influenced by the sources, culture backgroundsand the change of times, shows that various plants in727mountains were found andrecorded at that time, reaching the number134in total, with eight plants, namely pine,bamboo, plum, peach, lotus, willow, maple and tea, being the typical ones.(3) By analyzing factors such as nature, politics, economy and culture all ofwhich are to have an effect on plants landscape, it comes to a conclusion that forestrylandscape and productive landscape take up a large portion of the plants landscape insuburban scenic area in Zhejiang. Besides, the paper further demonstrates the plantculture in Zhejiang by means of collecting relevant celebrities, legends, customs anddecorations.(4) The aesthetic model of the ancients on plants landscape mainly consists oftheir perceptions taken from visual, auditory and olfactory means, as well as theirdirect feelings for the shade and shadow of the trees. And it needs to be pointed outthat color is never their only focus when appreciating the plants. They also take themovement of plants into consideration, appreciating them both as a whole and indetails.(5) The top ten arbor collocation modes summarized from the local records onmountains in Zhejiang are also included in the paper. The author also adds somecommonly-seen composing modes of plant communities, based on the research on plants of the same type, plants of different types and certain plant landscape that fallsinto special category. And it can come to a conclusion that plants must possesscharacteristics such as “peculiar”,“ancient”, and “odd” if they are to make thelandscape alone.(6) The paper discusses the current existing condition of the suburban scenic area,the challenges and opportunities it faces and the inheritance and application oftraditional planting design in modern gardening combined with practical projects.Suburban scenic area in zhejiang province,plants landscape,aesthetic model,plantculture,plant communities...
