Nowadays, the industry of automotive is in a great boom. Thepromotion of new type cars and the innovation in power train haveaccelerated the updating of new generation greatly. However, a lot ofquality problems have emerged out on the new generation, whichinfluences the fame of many manufactures, as well as customers`safety.More and more concerns are paid on the reliability of the vehicle and itscomponents.Reliability is an important index measuring a product`s quality. Toimprove the competitiveness of a company, a good control andmanagement of products`reliability in the process of designing andmanufacturing is needed for products with high reliability. Also this canmake a contribution to a better economic benefit.In this paper, an efficient process on how to improve the reliability ofproducts will be design by cooperating with the company on a projectnamed the reliability growth of diesel engine and its accelerated life test.Also one component of the engine will be designated to set an examplefor the whole system`s reliability growth. And an finite element analysisof the component will be executed and an experiment to identify theresults of the simulation analysis will be taken to further confirm the rootcause of the component`s faulty. The main work is as follows:1) Evaluation on the current product`s reliability levelBy collecting the record of maintenance, several index of dieselengine`s reliability can be calculated and an evaluation on the reliabilitycan be made. Also components with high failure rate can be found out.2) Focusing on one of the components with high failure rate and takingsome measures to do pre-preparation on reliability improvement. It isconsist of two part of work: simulations and identifying tests. The component chosen is flywheel cover (bell housing). Simulationon the flywheel cover can show the stress distribution and help to make apre-diagnosis of the fault cause.After the simulation, an experiment is designed to identify theresults of finite element analysis. Both measures to carry out the test andextra work needed before the experiment can be described in this part.Also two pairs of parts will be designed to fix the flywheel cover on thefatigue-testing machine. The root cause of the fault and the life of thecomponent can be got through this test.
