With the rapid progress of our socio-economic and the general improvement of people’sliving standards, people make more and more attention to the enjoyment of the spiritual life.The number of visitors increased because of the free-open policy. The museum’senvironmental quality, especially the acoustic environment of the public space has becomeone of the most dissatisfied conditions of the environment. For museums, they usually usemuch of stone in the interior design and not too much to consider the noise problem in thehalls,showrooms and public spaces. Because the lack of professional acoustic guide, it causesthe problems of loud background noise and poor speech intelligibility.The paper focuses on the acoustic environment of museum’s central public space andproposes the necessity of improvement, which bases on the research of spatial pattern atvarious museums. It also introduces the museum’s process of original and development, aswell as the evolution and its functional development. Furthermore, the emergence anddevelopment of the atrium as central space could be found in this paper. Based on the researchof acoustic environment at museum’s central public space, three museums at Xi’an city weredid the research and questionnaire. From analysis of questionnaire and research on people’smental behavior, we got the people’s subjective assessment on acoustic environment ofmuseum. From doing the noise reduction research on cultural relic halls at Terracotta Warriorsand Horses Museum, the paper gives the deep study and suggestion on acoustic environmentof museum’s central public space. Finally, it provides the theoretic and practical reference onhow to improve the acoustic environment of museum.
