The development of architecture has been significantly influenced by science andtechnology ever since. The revolution of information technology has not only changedour life style, but also affected our recognition on architectural space in a profound way.Around the Millennium, the physical space and virtual space became much moreconnected owing to the development and popularity of mobile and wearable digitaldevices. The concept of “Cyberspace” which solely refers to the virtual space somehowbecame obsolete compared to the more compatible concept of “Hybrid Space”. Duringthis process, due to the inherited relationship to information technology, manyresearchers in librarianship start to study issues regarding the operation of “HybridLibrary”. Academic libraries are considered trail blazers in these explorations.Academic Library has experienced a three-stage paradigm shift fromreader-centered paradigm, book-centered paradigm to learning-centered paradigm, inwhich the evolution of information and communication technologies plays a dominantrole. The impact that technologies exert on architecture is two-fold: one that is directlyvia the structure, craft and equipment; the other is through the transformation ofpeople’s behavior within the buildings, which indirectly influence the space design. Most previous researches on academic library in information age focused on the formeraspect. Therefore, this thesis seeks to study the need and behavioral pattern of people inthe academic library through questionnaire and behavioral mapping, both of whichcome from environment-behavior studies. Its aim is to supplement the existingresearches from a microscopic perspective. The last chapter in this thesis discusses the occupants’ behavioral characteristicsfrom three aspects including the reconstruction of personal space, the evolution ofinformation acquisition procedure and the challenges for multitask processing. Thespatial configurations related to these behavioral patterns are proposed afterwards, which could provide some reference for academic library design in the future.
