Architectural Ornament Study Of Chunzai Lou,Dongshan,Suzhou

Residential building, as the most important part of Chinese ancient architecture, sufficiently embodies the local environment and cultural traditions. Residential building is a natural outcome which combines with the local characters in its unique way. The best building is the one which takes use of the local materials and in accordance with the local environment. ChunZai Lou not only follows all the required rules but also has its own characteristic, which is when it was built---the Republican period. Under this specific historical condition, all the buildings are characterized by the fusion of western and eastern. It is a kind of unheard-of chaos. Plus the war time situation, the big depression, which all contributed to the specialty of ChunZai Lou. All the manual craftsmen treated ChunZai Lou, the one which spending billions, as an opportunity to show their talents, and to make the building an exquisite one. ChunZai Lou is an important conclusion of Chinese ancient architecture. Its splendid ending is not only a conclusion to the previous Chinese ancient architecture, but also a researching case which combines the social value, artistic value and investigative value for the following researchers.This thesis paper takes ChunZai Lou as the study object and there are generally four chapters. Chapterl is the introduction part, which contains the orientation of the thesis, the aims and the meanings of the study, is a kind of preliminary understanding. Chapter2is about the on-the-spot investigation of the local environment, cultural traditions, and materials that in accordance with the environment and the constructive method of the locals. Chapter3is the systematical elaboration and summary through the study and classification of the decorative techniques, patterns and themes. The construction of ChunZai Lou applies several kinds of decorative techniques, which includes the expression of carpentry, bricklaying, stonemason and painting. The analysis of the decorations according to the different decorative techniques is also included. This is the main part of this thesis paper. Chapter4, as the most important part of this paper, mainly elaborates the specific existing value of ChunZai Lou, clearly explains its present situation and the future development comprehensively analyze and summarize the value of the building, and the affirmation to its inheritance value.
