Automotive instrument industry has developed for more than60years in china, which has gone through several different stages. The technical level and performance indicators of our country’s automotive instrumentation products could basically meet most supporting and maintenance requirement of different models, mini car, heavy vehicles, light vehicle, bus, agricultural vehicles and some imported cars. But compared with the vehicle technology, the automotive instrument technology still has gap, also has big difference compared with the advanced industrial countries. Low level of technology, single product appearance, poor quality, lagging manufacturing process, short of durability are the main being problems. Besides, traditional automotive instrument which uses the ECU to control has too much wiring which is hard to operate and could not handle large amount of information. Therefore, designing and making high quality and efficient automotive instrument system has become the aim of the automotive instrument industry. Compared to the traditional technology, the automotive instrument based on the Lab VIEW technology has more blameless and its structure is more simple, saved a lot of human and material resources. The common cars are referenced as the prototypes in the system presented in this thesis, and the system has two ways to display the information, digital display and dial display. The system has simulated the instrument form several respects, include the engine speed, vehicle speed, coolant temperature, oil volume and some alarm indicators. The virtual instrument which developed by the national instrument is a graphical programming language. The different between the virtual instrument and the other programming language is that it takes the icons and connections to program, not the text, simple and efficient. This thesis uses the Lab VIEW to simulate the automotive instrument, and the main contents are:the learning of the history and development statue about the automotive instrument; different developing stage of the meter and its typical type of technology; researching the basic working principle of the meter, including each pointer instrument and its related sensors; using the Lab VIEW technology to simulate the working process of the meter, including the engine speed, vehicle speed, coolant temperature and other indicators; according to the modular design ideas, designing the serial communication between the Lab VIEW and the PC to realize the data exchange between the system and the outside; using the function library that comes with the Lab VIEW to process the data which collected from the serial ports, delivering the results to the display terminal; after researching the embedded technology of the Lab VIEW, designing a hardware solutions based on the arm7controller. The virtual instrument is used more and more widely in each areas. The automotive instrument system based on the virtual instrument takes the advantage of easy to operate of the technology and vividly simulated the working process of the meter system. This design has shorted the development cycle, optimized the system, accelerated the product process and has certain practical value.
