Modern parks, as the green lung of the city, play an important role in the humanities, social andecological aspects, and has become an indispensable part of the modern city. Chinese classical gardens hasa history of thousands of years, while modern park design is influenced by the Western model. Localcharacteristics and its context in the growing popularity of the city park construction has attracted more andmore attention of garden art researchers and urban planners and designers of the park. How to get rid of theshackles of the Western model, and how to fully develop and publicize local natural features and culturalcharacteristics, and eventually form its own unique design concept and style become the key problems ofthe study. Through a comparative study of the ancient and modern gardens, and analysis of the existingproblems in the construction of this park and its demand can provide a good breakthrough. Garden art, however, is a content-rich, involving a wide range of complex, it’s hard to achieve a thorough research inthis article with a limited number of pages, so I selected a total of one of the basic components of classicalgardens and city parks-park road system as the object of the study. Wei Songlin has defined park road as acomplex located in the city park green matrix, which is constructed from all types of park roads, pavementvenues and subsidiary facilities of park roads. Park roads are very important elements in both Classicalgardens and modern city park, and are the bones and blood of the garden, not only for sightseeing of thegarden, the organization of the traffic from the important role of guide and dredge, also in landscape design,Meaning unique expression and promoting exchanges. Taking park roads as the research object, andmaking a comparative study of classical and modern city park, can get big results.Firstly a full investigation of the research history and current situation of park roads system of Chineseclassical gardens and modern city parks has been made, and a full understanding on the research of theancient and modern garden park roads, the problems and prospects for development are reached.Secondly, the system of Chinese classical gardens park roads is studied, its aesthetic significance, function, layout, pavement design are discussed. Classical gardens park roads are designed primarily toserve the aesthetic needs of the ancient elite, so its artistry and beauty of artistic conception is in a primelocation, while the function, layout and pavement design serve that core. Then in function to guide the viewing, to serve with scenery play a main role; in layout it focus on creating a the winding mood; inpavement design it varies in forms, and pays attention to the implication of expression.Thirdly, park roads system of the modern city parks is studied, and its function, layout and pavement arediscussed. Modern city parks belong to the infrastructure which serves to the community, so the park roadssystem by contrast focus more on the functional implementation, in addition to the organization of traffic, separated the landscape, it will organize the park infrastructure such as drainage, circuit and communicationsystem, and it’s more important to provide activity and exchange places for tourists, which have a strongersocial attributes; in layout, due to their diverse needs and hierarchical, it pays more attention to localconditions and is more people-oriented; in pavement, due to the development of modern science andtechnology and art, it varies on the materials selection, and pays attention to the color coordination withsurrounding landscape. Finally, a comparative study of the modern city parks and classical gardens park roads is made. On theheritage of the modern city park road system from classical gardens, it focuses on the pursuit for mood, andthe pavement style varies; on the innovation of the modern city park road system, it is firstly reflected in itspeople-oriented, serve the public ideas; followed reflection in the form of space open and the unite to thecity, and then reflected in its modern scientific layout and function on multiple and diverse, and finallyembodied in its flexibility in the use of modern scientific and artistic achievements; for the problems inmodern city park road system, on the one hand, the design concept tends too westernized, on the other hand,it tends to fast-food-like and design scarcity; for future city park road system design recommendations, thispaper proposed recommendations focus on creative expression and the design of the context, and thetypical cases are cited as references.
