This paper attempts to sum up the important characteristics of modern urban park design in Shanghai, and the factors that effecting them. For this, the author synthetically analyzed the history of modern Landscape Architecture emerging and developing in Shanghai.The history of Chinese traditional landscape design could date back to at least the 11th century BC. During the 3000 years, it had formed an unique aesthetic judgment of nature, and the Shan-Shui garden system. In 1868, the 'public garden' was built in Shanghai, so urban park emerging and starting to develop in China. During the 1990s', a lots of western modern landscape projects had been introduced into China in books and articles. Many theories of modernism and post-modernism were coming into China together. As the constructing of landscape accelerated rapidly in China recent years, more and more foreign companies have taken part in the landscape design in Shanghai. Many new design thoughts and theories have been brought to china, and this obliterated the national characteristics and the regionalities. After many years practice, some theories are proved unsuitable to us. Today, the designers of great insight are giving more attentions to the nationalities and localisms of Modern Landscape Design. They look forward to the splendent future of landscape design in China.Lots of different style parks have been constructed in recent ten years. Based on the study of the history of landscape design in Shanghai, this paper expounds multiple resources of Modern Landscape Design in Shanghai. Carrying the genes of traditional culture, and taking the blood of western civilization, the landscape design in Shanghai has the proper temperament of the 'Shanghai Style of Culture'. The rapid development of Shanghai has greatly changed the city's appearance, and influenced the functions and forms of urban park in Shanghai. Parks become unseparate parts of urban space. With this merging, our traditional enclosed garden space is never suitable to our temporal life. So, Western Modern Landscape Designs become to be paradigms of Shanghai. But this makes the city losing its living characteristics. As many different styles of design are there, People have different opinions over Modern Landscape Design of Shanghai.The studying of Shanghai's urban park naturally leads us to compare the oriental and the western landscape cultures. Despite the different philosophies, aesthetic judgments and developing processes, there are likenesses between the eastern and western. They are all learning from nature and imbibing nutrients from other form of art. We used to see the different of the final results but ignorance the same source.
