As the main components in a pneumatic system, the cylinder has its charateristicsof simple structure, low manufactureing cost, high reliability, adjustable movementspeed and so on. It is widely used in automatic production lines to drive the workpiecesfinishing some operations like handling, steping up, feeding, loading or unloading andpositioning. The use of cylinder makes the production automated.When a cylinder drives the load, if the speed of the piston rod was too fast or thecylinder’s buffer was failure, the piston would give cylinder’s cover an instantaneousand large force whenever the piston reach the stroke terminal. That load is calledimpact load. On the automatic production line, in order to improve the productionefficiency and reduce the cost, the speed of the cylinder is fast and the use time is long.So, in most cases, the load that a cylinder takes is the impact load. Because theperformance of the cylinder which takes the impact load determines the lifes andapplications of the cylinder, it is very important for the the choice of the cylinder onthe use of industrial production.So, it is meaningful to build a platform for testing thecylinder’s performance and discussing the influence factors to the cylinder’sperformance that under impact load.Firstly, the paper starts from the application status and the trend of thedevelopment of the pneumatic technology. Then it introduces the source of the topicand the significance of the research that clears the research’s content. The next step, itresearchs the structure of the test cylinder and introduces the cylinder’s mainperformances. Then it researchs the key performances of a cylinder under impact loadand design the testing principles.Before building the test platorm, it discusses the factors that influence cylinder’sperformance which takes the impact load,such as loads, frequencys and pressure of gas.On the basis of these, it determines the plan of the test. After these preparations arecompleted, it begins to build the hardware of the test platform, including cylinder’sinstallation platform, penumatic circuit and electrical comtrol system. Then it starts todesign software of the platform. It includes the ladder diagram of PLC and the design of the man-machine interface. At the same time, one of the most important testelements, the laser displacement sensor, that the model is IL-300, is studied.After the building of hardware and softward of the test platform finished, itdebugs the test platform. The platform can work steadily and measure the performanceof the cylinder that we care about accurately. At last, it introduces the operation stepsof the test for the cylinder under impact load in accordance with the formulated scheme.And then it lists the results of the test and analyse them. Finally, it sums up some testconclusion.
