Impact resistance capability of ship equipments is directly related to the warships’ life,and the research of the warships’ response to impact load has great significance. The maincylinders of steam turbine are the main power equipments of warships, so the paper putemphasis on the main cylinders, and made shock response analysis by numerical simulationand experiments. The paper built the model of the whole cylinder, and imposed impact loadusing time domain simulation method to analyze the response. Based on the numericalanalysis, experimental research was carried to analyze the calculation precision.First of all, the paper built the finite element model of the main steam turbine cylinder,analyzed the problems of stiffness, strength and so on in a complex work environment, andput forward structure optimization schemes by optimization analysis of the main steamturbine cylinder structure. According to the analysis and comparison of the simulation resultsof every scheme, the effective structure optimization and improvement measures were putforward in the light of a certain type of main steam turbine cylinder.Secondly, according to the models provided by optimization schemes, a series ofoperating conditions were designed in term of the time domain load design method of Germanarmy mark BV0430-85. Numerical impact tests were conducted on the optimized cylinderwith a time domain simulation method to study the laws of shock response and analyzeimpact resistance capabilities of the cylinder in each direction.Thirdly, taking integrated conditions into considerations, the paper defined the scale ofthe test model, designed and checked the test fixtures, made arrangement schemes of testingpoints on the base of numerical calculation results and at last, determined all workingconditions of impact loads.Fourthly, the paper carried out sweep frequency and impact tests of the scaled model,analyzed the experiment results, processed the experiment data, extracted accelerations andthe peaks of the stress responses, made comparison of the experimental values and calculatedvalues, achieved average calculating errors of the time domain method, analyzed the errorcauses, and discussed the strength of the structure under impact loads.The paper used both a numerical method and experiments to study the impact response of the cylinder model. The results showed that it has a certain precision to study the marineequipments with the time domain method. Compared to the experiment results, the results ofthe time domain method had errors of about30%, which should be considered when the timedomain method is used to make numerical analysis.
