With the development of smart grid and smart substation, electronic transformer has gradually replaced the traditional electromagnetic transformer and been used more and more widely. As a digital interface device between the electronic transformer and the secondary protection measuring control device, merging unit plays a crucial role in smart substation architecture. At the same time, Intelligent Electronic Devices (IED) in power system began to use the network communication mode to transmit information, the network synchronization technology IEEE1588has been formally incorporated into the second version of IEC61580, called IEC61588. Its synchronization accuracy reaches sub-microsecond, providing a good solution for the time synchronization between IED of the intelligent substation. Therefore the research and design of the intelligent merging unit based on IEEE1588standard has important significance on the popularity of the electronic transformer and the development of intelligent substations.This paper introduced the basic principle of IEEE1588standard first, then based on the basic functions and main features of the merging unit, it analyzed the feasibility of IEEE1588standard used in intelligent merging unit and pointed out the prospects and advantages of the IEEE1588standard used in power system. The article also studied the structure of the device hardware and software system, designing a intelligent merging unit based the FPGA and MPC8313E. The device uses FPGA and MPC8313E dual-processor as core of the hardware system, taking advantage of the FPGA chip high-speed multi-channel parallel processing power to complete the data collection and transmission of multiple electronic transformers. MPC8313E as CPU of the device, not only completes the complex data processing and realizes the hardware support for IEEE1588time synchronization protocol and Ethernet communication utilizing the functionality of the chip itself. At the same time, the software uses the VxWorks real-time operating system and implements data acquisition, processing and transmission with the help of IEEE1588precision time synchronization.
