Following the urbanization and the development of economics, many of the cities in China are nowfacing the challenge of managing the urban transportation system due to the explosive increase of both thepopulation and the cars. Taking Urumqi as an example, from2000to2010, the city area has increased67%,the population has increased almost50%and the registered number of vehicles increased174%. As a result, the share of the non-motorized trip has decreased and the motorized trip (especially the car trip) hasincreased dramatically, and the traffic has become extremely congested in the city center. What the futureof Urumqi traffic scenario looks like is a concern of both the professionals and the general residents.Transportation is the arteries of the city, a healthy transportation system is key to sustain the developmentof the city. In recent years, urban transportation has received more and more attention both from themunicipalities of all levels as well as the societies. It has been realized that it is important to evaluate theurban transportation system in a precise and scientific way; therefore, the urban transportation model hasbecome an obvious choice. Urban transportation has provided a platform for the planner to evaluatedifferent planning options. It has played key roles for two major reasons: firstly, modern transportationinfrastructures like road, metro and large interchange are very expensive, the urban transport model canhelp the planner to evaluate the project and therefore to reduce the finance risk; secondly, in order torelieve the traffic congestion, we need to forecast the future traffic conditions by using the urbantransportation model and then to prepare the solution. Urban transportation model is an important analysistool and has been widely used in urban planning, which can provide a way to evaluate the development ofthe urban transportation system in a strategic way and provide the insights for the development of the city. This paper using the city of Urumqi as an example, analysis has been carried out to collect the trip featuresof Urumqi using the household interview survey data of2010, a four stage urban transportation has beendeveloped using these data, and a careful validation has been carried out to make sure this modelrepresents the travel pattern of Urumqi. This model has been used to forecast the general future trafficsituation of Urumqi with the metro as a variable. The result shows that although the metro can reduce the public transport travel time and make the public transport more competitive, it has little impact on the carowners. In order to develop a more sustainable transport system the transport demand managementmeasure is a must.
