500kV Guilin substation located in the suburbs of Guilin in the north of Guangxi Province is the vital node in the "Power Transmission from Guizhou to East " channel of China Southern Power Grid. In2009,China Southern Power Grid implemented the DC ice melting and SVC device projects in Guilin substation, the ice melting device could meet the Guilin Substation500kV and220kV outlet melting ice requirements. When the ice melting device doesn’t work, it can be converted to Static Var Compensator (SVC) through the topology conversion to compensate reactive power rapidly and continuously for AC system to maintain the voltage stability.However, in actual operation, when device is in the SVC mode, because of the SVC thyristor group large current for a long time operation, resulting in the device operation consumption is larger; In addition, Guilin substation is connected with capacitors, reactors, and other compensation equipments, how to reasonably distribute the reactive power between the ice melting device and SVCs connected in the220kv bus in order to reduce substation equipments consumption is a problem to be studied. Therefore, it’s necessary for DC ice melting device and SVC economic operation characteristics are studied, through the research results of rational arrangement of Guilin Substation SVC stable operation mode, achieving the purpose of energy saving.SVC is used for improving the power grid var compensation, reduce active consumption, but on its own operation economic analysis is rarely, this paper will explores through SVC consumption model, influence on economic operation of power grid and SVC with low voltage capacitors/reactors coordinated operation to reduce the consumption, Comparing of before and after SVC operation substation economic performance indicators, to assess the influence of its operation on the substation economic operation in order that management could arrange SVS operation more reasonably for a reliable foundation.This paper contains SVC and low voltage capacitor/reactance500kV Guilin substation simulation analysis used in two ways, one is the use of power system analysis software BPA on Guilin substation and local equivalent grid to do steady state simulation for analysing and calculating power grid operation indicators; on another hand, SVC is a dynamic compensation element, this paper establish SVC and Guilin substation simulation model in the PSCAD simulation platform.
