This article is divided into four parts to discuss the spatial form of the Zhong ancient town and the24courtyards of the Shen’s Family.The first part contains one chapter, which starts from how this research topic was raised, and describes the signification of this topic, methodology and the structure&content of this article.The second part consists of chapter2that introduces the basic information of the Zhong ancient town. The author starts with the geographical location, natural and historical background, and social-humanities environment to analyze the formation, development and transmutation of the Zhong ancient town. This chapter is the foundation of the rest parts of this article.Chapter3to chapter5constitute the third part. In this part, site selection and spatial layout is first analyzed. And then the spatial constitution of streets is analyzed from dot to line and then plane. Besides, residential form is also analyzed starting with the style, function, space, layout and etc., based on survey data, documentary and pictures, and the spatial layout of the buildings is the main focus. The residential architecture is also investigated and concluded in detail from technical and artistic perspective. At the end, the author comprehensively analyzed the spatial configuration of the24courtyards-the main heritage of the Shen’s family. The author takes advantage of the theory of ’space syntax’and focuses on spatial layout, bringing a brand new angle of view to the readers. This part is the main focus of the whole article.The fourth part has the last chapter-chapter6, which discusses about the conservation and development of the Zhong ancient town based on the previous analysis. In this chapter, the author pointed out that beyond basic conservation, tourism should also be properly developed on top of the historical heritage, and the interest of all parties should be well balanced. This article combined on-site investigation with summarizing available information to analyze the historical inheritance of the town, residential form and space layout; raise effective ways of preserving and developing the ancient settlements; and provide reference information for future study.
