Since the20th century, the relationship between countries and regions increasingly close, theregional economic cooperation has become the trend of world economic development, which is the maincontent of the economic globalization. however, weak interaction intensity between the central and westernregions, the phenomenon of economic segmentation is very serious. It hinder the resource allocation, thedivision of labor cooperation and the optimization of space structure among areas. Therefore, researching onthe interaction pattern and its evolution characteristics among the cities of the Midwest, exploring thepattern evolving mechanism, has very important theoretical and realistic significance. This article selects the central plains economic zone as the study area,in the summary of previousstudies on the interaction among cities, base on the perspective of time and space evolution, the core idea is"line—point—face",which is the intrinsic logic of the growth and development of urban system, theinteraction pattern among the cities of the central plains economic zone is decomposed into three levels of"line","point","face",each level analysing separately from the two dimensions of space and time, usinggravity model, the potential model, the membership model and other theoretical models for calculatingrelated data, adopting correlation analysis, Excel charts, ArcGIS spatial analysis and other analysis methodsto analyse the evolving process and characteristics of spatial and temporal pattern of1990‐2010’sinteraction among cities of the central plains economic zone.According to the results of the analysis, thetime quantum of1990‐2010will be divided into two stages:low speed growth stage from1990to2000and2000-2010rapid growth stage from2000to2010.The basic characteristics of the first stage is that thegrowth rate is slow and steady. The basic characteristics of the second stage is that the growth rate is morefast and the polarization trend emerged.According to the characteristics, summarizing the five mechanismsof the evolution. The five mechanisms:the polarization effect of the core city is the intrinsic motivation;thespatial relationships among the cities and the potential of the nodes are the backbone;the spatio-temporalstationarity and pushing is moderating factors;the institutional and policy factors are the externalconditions;the traffic factor is the breakthrough. Finally, combining the reality of the construction of thecentral plains economic zone, put forward corresponding regulating Suggestions respectively from thelevels of "line","point"and"face".
