| To build a moderately prosperous society in an all round way, it is an important task to promote an overall prosperity of rural economy, accelerate the process of urbanization, and coordinate the economic and social development in urban and rural areas. As urbanization is surging ahead, the position and role of towns become more significant.The lack of coherence between urban planning and architectural planning are obviously seen in the central areas of small cities and towns, which prevents them being centers with local characteristics. Given this, a method or means is urged to coordinate the public architectural facilities and the special state of these centers. That is typically what urban design serves: a bridge between the two. Shenzhen City has legalized rules of drawing to control and guide its urban construction, and thus well placed itself as a model for making legalized rules of drawing compulsory guarantee for urban construction. This thesis is to make a further study on the urban design of public architectural facilities based on an analysis of the urban design in the central areas of small cities and towns. By combining the results of theoretical and empirical studies, this thesis attempts to form a set of legalized rules of drawing with an aim to guiding and controlling the urban design for the central areas of small cities and towns.The central areas of small cities and towns are usually where the citizens head for public or recreational activities. As an opened-up window, they are the emphasis of urban construction. Modern methods of urban design can control the after-construction effects of public spaces and thus are more utilized in every aspect and period of urban construction. In spite of this, these modern methods still remain a new topic when comes the urban construction of small cities and towns. Currently, there are few practices and no compulsory controlling and guiding rules in this regard. The guiding rules of some small cities and towns are too simple. The controlling and guiding rules of some urban centers are sometimes used for the central areas of small cities and towns without any thoughts and revision.The first chapter illustrates the necessity of target of making such a study. After an explanation of the related concepts, this chapter defines the major types, features and components of the central areas of small cities and towns, which lays a foundation for the following argumentation.The second chapter analyses the current urban design for the central areas in small cities and towns from a macro perspective and then puts forward the strong points and weak points of the current design from four different angles.The third chapter serves as the main part of this thesis. First of all, the role of urban design is defined after an illustration of its relationship with urban planning and architectural design as well.Next comes what urban design includes. The features and orientation of urban design for small cities and towns are discussed in this chapter as a cornerstone for further specified study. The theories and methods of modern urban design, as the guidance of urban design, are analyzed and discussed from the perspectives of small cities and towns, which constitutes a highlight of this thesis. The section followed is a specific study on the urban design of small cities and towns from seven points.The fourth chapter zooms in on the urban design of public architectural facilities in the central areas of small cities and towns so as to sharpen the applicability of this thesis. As the urban design of public architectural facilities in these central areas are not commonly seen, this thesis analyzes by category the current situation of the public architectural facilities in these areas and the demands of urban design in this regard.The fifth chapter represents the fruits of urban design in these central areas, including the study on the system of urban design, rules of drawing and rules of urban design. A set of legalized rules of drawing is finally got for the urban design in the central areas of small cities and towns, which includes the overall rules and plot-based rules. The overall rules contain ten articles, in charge of the control over the establishment and implementation of related issues. Plot-based rules shall be established upon the situations of different land plots and specific projects, and thus are not discussed in this thesis.The sixth chapter includes some comments and examples of urban design in these central areas. The examples are illustrated to echo the author's opinion in this thesis. |
