In precent electronic information age, As the electronic product testing tools, electronic measuring instruments tend to high-speed, integrated and intelligent directiongradually. As an electronic measuring instrument,Arbitrary Waveform Generator (AWG)is emerged in this background. After several generations of development, the AWG cannot only produces simple waveform as traditional signal generator but also exhibitsmodulated signal. What’s more,it also can generate arbitrary waveform. The AWG iswidely used in military, health care and education area. It made a great contribution tothe science.Arbitrary waveform generator module is a signal generator of electronic syntheticinstrument based on the PXI-Express. The AWG generate the waveform based on twokinds of mode: DDWS and DDFS.DDWS and DDFS have its own advantages anddisadvantages respectively,so it can be applied in different scenarios. At first, this paper introduces the history and development tendency of AWG, thenthe design of the AWG is completed through comparing the DDWS with DDFS.In thenext, we select the chip and finish the schematic principle design and PCB design.Atlast,we realize the DDWS and DDFS through FPGA.This paper has three noticeable difficulties: high capacity storage, high-speeddigital-to analog conversion and high-speed circuit design. So we should understand theread/write operation well, the configuration of the ditigal-to-analog and the signalintegrity are also required to be master skillfully. We use VHDL to program the FPGA, use the modelsim to do the simulation anddo the on-line debugging by Chipscope.
