The formation and development of highway is closely related to theregional development. Yangtze River Delta area is one of the most robust economicstrengths in China, where the density and connection degree of road network ishighly developed, and the whole area is basically covered with expressway network.Road passenger and cargo fluxes in Yangtze River Delta region are very much biggerthan the other areas, such data of this area can reflect the transport links and trueregional relationship between cities more directly and accurately, and the perceptionfor the urban hierarchy would be more precise. This master’s thesis adopts the statistics of road passenger and cargofluxes in133cities among Shanghai, Zhejiang and Jiangsu. Using the concentrationfactor, unbalanced coefficient, Gravity Model Approach correction, maximum gravityconnection and other research methods for quantitative analysis of road passengerand cargo fluxes, embodied by its spacial relationship, judging the changes andgrades of nodes. This thesis finds that passenger nodes distribution are scattering, and nodes are changeable; addtionally, cargo nodes are relatively stable, Shanghai isa cargo shipping center; finally, passenger and cargo nodes are different which havedifferent nodes’ level and quantity. On this basis, we analyzes the nodes’distribution and spatial patternchanges in1990,1995,2000,2005,2010with the introduction of composite flowaperture on a comprehensive evaluation of road passenger and cargo fluxes, thenobtains the following conclusions: firstly, the construction of urban hierarchy inYangtze River Delta area is increasingly reasonable, the total nodes cities show atrend of decrease and the node hierarchy structure is more reasonable; secondly, thenodes’ levels of prefecture-level cities are significantly higher than the county-levelcities, and the space distribution pattern that Shanghai is the main center, Hangzhouand Nanjing is the subcenter, Ningbo, Lishui, Taizhou, Changzhou are tertiary centerhad formed gradually; thirdly, urban hierarchy in Yangtze River Delta area shows atendency of reasonable evolution. The urban hierarchy in Yangtze River Delta area based on road passengerand cargo fluxes, reflects the mutual relationship between cities based on roadpassenger and cargo fluxes, the higher the level of center city, the wider radiation inthe area, and the stronger the dominant position. According to the research results, the conclusion is consistent with the actual situation.
