Changchun Dacheng Group plant-based chemical dibasic alcohol project is supported by National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC). However, the industrialized production line products thousands of tons of distillation every year which causes environmental issues. If methods of distillation applications can not be solved the project will not develop for long. In this paper, resin-alcohol E (one kind of distillation) was modified into oligomers and those of10wt%were added into the reaction of the unsaturated polyester resins systems for preparing plant-based unsaturated polyester resins so that problems of distillation backlogging will be solved. This project belongs to Shanghai supporting the northeast industrial projects of2011(project number:11195820700).(1) In this paper, the components of resin-alcohol E were analyzed with gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) and fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), oligomers were prepared from the reaction of resin-alcohol E and phthalic anhydride and the effects of different reaction conditions on properties of oligomers were studied to determine the optimum reaction process; meanwhile oligomers were characterized with FT-IR and some other properties were tested.(2) Just as mentioned above, oligomers were added into the unsaturated polyester resins reaction systems and the effects of different polymerization conditions on properties of resins were studied to determine the optimum polymerization process, the chemical construction of resins were characterized with FT-IR.(3) The effects of different initiator and accelerant dosage on resins curing performance were studied to determine the optimum curing process and curing performance of different oligomers addition resins were discussed in this paper.(4) The effects of different oligomers addition on mechanical properties, thermal stability of the resin, etc of resins were studied. The results show:(1) The bases of resinol E are glycerol (50.43%), butanediol (29.99%), thyleneglycol (2.98%), propylene glycol (2.85%), water (0.04%) and other ingredients (13.71%); the optimum process for oligomers is determined:the mole ratio of resin-alcohol E to phthalic anhydride is3.5:1, the proper reaction temperature and time is180℃and3h respectively with0.33wt%catalyst.(2) The optimum process for resins is determined:the proper reaction temperature and time is200℃and4.5h respectively with1wt%catalyst.(3) The best dosage of initiator and accelerator is1.5wt%and lwt%respectively, resin curing rate decreased with the increase of oligomers.(4) The tensile strength of the resins and preservation performance are lower than those of commercial resins while the bending and impact strength are higher.(5) When dosage of oligomers for low-end unsaturated polyester resins is at about10wt%~20wt%, the performance of resins can still be met.
